What makes an oversized t-shirt premium?

A premium oversized t-shirt comes down to five things you can check before you pay: fabric that weighs 6 oz or more, a real boxy cut with a size chart that proves it, a print that goes into the cotton, plain facts on the product page, and a return policy you can actually use. The price tag tells you less than you'd think. A $60 tee on thin fabric isn't premium. Here is each check, with the numbers from our own oversized t-shirts so you have something to compare against.

1. Fabric weight: 6 oz or more

US shops list fabric weight in ounces per square yard. Outside the US you'll see GSM, grams per square meter, and 1 oz is about 34 GSM. For an oversized tee you want 6 oz (about 203 GSM) or heavier. Lighter than that and the extra width has nothing holding it up, so the tee clings and folds instead of hanging straight.

Our oversized tee is the Bella+Canvas 3010, 6 oz, 100% combed and ring-spun cotton. Our regular tee, the Bella+Canvas 3001, is 4.2 oz (about 142 GSM). That's right for a fitted tee and too light for a boxy one. If a product page doesn't list the weight at all, assume it's on the light side. More on this in is a 6 oz t-shirt heavy?

2. The cut: dropped shoulders and a wider, shorter body

An oversized tee isn't a regular tee two sizes up. The shoulder seam sits down on your arm, the body is wider and the length is usually shorter. That's the boxy shape.

Compare the same size across both fits on the size chart. Our oversized M is 21 1/8 in across the chest and 28 in long. Our regular M is 20 in across and 29 in long. So you get about an inch more width flat (2 in all the way round), an inch less length and the dropped shoulder, and you order your usual size. If a brand's "oversized" M has the same numbers as its regular M, it's a loose regular tee with a new name. The full chart is in should you size up in an oversized t-shirt?

3. The print: in the fabric, not on top of it

Cheap graphic tees often use a vinyl or plastic transfer that sits on the surface. It feels stiff, traps heat and cracks at the folds. A better tee uses a print that soaks into the cotton.

Every tee we sell is printed direct to garment (DTG) by Printful in the USA after you order. The printer puts water-based ink straight into the cotton, so the print bends with the shirt. The front print on Time Is Soft is 10.4 in wide and about 15.5 in tall, which fills most of the chest. If you want to know how DTG compares with film transfers, read DTF vs DTG printing.

4. Facts on the page, not adjectives

"Premium fabric" and "luxury feel" cost nothing to write. A shop that uses good fabric usually tells you exactly what it is. Look for:

  • the fabric and blend, like 100% cotton
  • the weight in oz or GSM
  • a size chart in inches for that exact fit
  • the print method and the print size
  • where it's made and how long it takes to ship
  • how to wash it

Our product pages list all of these. Wide Awake, for example, says 6 oz cotton, dropped shoulders, a print 10.4 in wide and close to 14 in tall, XS to 3XL, $39.99, printed in the USA.

5. What happens after you pay

A good tee is easy to send back. Read the return policy before you buy. How many days do you get? Is it a refund or store credit? Who pays for return shipping? Is a wrong size swapped for free?

Ours: within 7 days of delivery you can return a tee for a full refund, for any reason, and a size that doesn't fit gets swapped for free. Printing and packing take 2 to 5 business days, delivery takes 3 to 4 more, and US shipping is free. The details are on our return policy page.

What a premium oversized tee costs

You don't need to spend $60 to get the five things above. Our 6 oz oversized tees are $39.99 and the 4.2 oz regular ones are $29.99, with free US shipping either way. If you're stuck between the two, oversized vs regular fit puts them side by side.

What fabric weight is best for an oversized t-shirt?

6 oz (about 203 GSM) or heavier. Ours is 6 oz cotton. Around 4 to 4.5 oz is better for a regular fitted tee.

Should I size up in an oversized t-shirt?

Not if it's cut oversized already. Ours is about an inch wider flat than the regular tee in the same size, with dropped shoulders, so order your usual size. Go up one only if you want more length.

Is a 6 oz oversized tee too hot for summer?

In most of the US it's fine, because it's 100% cotton and the loose cut lets air move. On a Texas or Florida afternoon the 4.2 oz regular tee is the cooler pick.

Does a DTG print crack?

Not the way a vinyl transfer does. Over a lot of washes it fades slowly. Wash it inside out in cold water and dry on low. Does DTG printing crack? has the long answer.
