Is a 6 oz T‑Shirt Heavy?

Yes, a little. 6 oz sits at the heavy end of everyday tees, and you can feel it the first time you pick one up.

What 6 oz actually means

The number is fabric weight. It means one square yard of the cloth weighs 6 ounces. It isn't the weight of the whole shirt, and it doesn't change with the size you buy. Outside the US the same thing is given in GSM, grams per square meter. Multiply ounces by about 34 to convert, so 6 oz is roughly 203 GSM.

How the usual ranges feel

Under 5 oz is a light tee. Our regular fit is 4.2 oz, about 142 GSM. It's soft, it drapes, and it's the one to wear in July. Hold it up to a window and some light comes through.

5 to 6 oz is the middle. Most band tees and gift-shop tees live here.

6 oz and up is where shops start saying heavyweight. The cloth is thicker, so it hangs away from your body and doesn't cling. A white one hides more. The collar also tends to stay flat after a lot of washes, which is the reason many people switch and never go back.

Why our oversized tee is 6 oz

We picked that weight on purpose. An oversized cut in thin fabric goes limp and starts to look like a nightshirt, but with thicker cloth the dropped shoulders keep their shape and the boxy outline stays boxy. A big front print also sits flatter on it, with fewer ripples.

Is it too warm?

In most of the US, no. It's still a cotton tee and it breathes. In a Texas or Florida summer you'll notice the extra cloth by mid-afternoon, and that's when the 4.2 oz regular fit earns its place.

What weight doesn't tell you

It says nothing about softness, because that comes from the yarn. Ours is combed and ring-spun cotton, which is smoother than the scratchy carded kind at the same weight. And it says nothing about shrinkage. Wash cold and dry on low, whatever the weight.

So which one?

If you want the tee to hold its shape and feel like it will last, go 6 oz. If you run hot or want something that moves, go lighter.
