DTF printing vs DTG: which is better for a t‑shirt?
26 Oct 2026 · Zojo · 5 min read

DTF printing puts your design on a sheet of film first and then heat-presses it onto the shirt, so the print sits on top of the fabric as a thin layer. DTG sprays the ink straight into the cotton, so it feels softer but works best on cotton. For a detailed, full-color design on a cotton tee, DTG is usually the better pick. It's what Printful uses for every ZOJO tee, printed in the USA after you order.
DTF still wins on polyester, mixed fabrics and small logos. Here's how each method works, how the prints feel, and how to tell which one you're buying.
How DTF printing works
DTF stands for direct-to-film. The printer lays the design down in mirror image on a clear PET film: the colors first, then a layer of white ink behind them so the colors stay bright on any fabric. While that ink is still tacky, a fine hot-melt powder is spread over it and melted on.
That sheet is now a transfer. A shop can store it for weeks or press it right away. At the heat press it goes onto the tee at about 320 to 338 °F for 10 to 15 seconds, and then the film is peeled off. The glue holds the design on.
Two things follow. DTF doesn't need the fabric treated first, and it sticks to more materials than DTG does, polyester and blends included. The catch is the feel. The print is a layer on top of the shirt, and on a big design it can feel a little plasticky.
How DTG printing works
DTG stands for direct-to-garment. Think of an inkjet printer where the paper is the t-shirt. The shirt is usually pre-treated, laid flat, and the printer sprays the design straight onto it. On dark shirts it puts down a white base first so the colors don't sink into the fabric.
The ink soaks into the cotton fibers instead of sitting on top. That's why DTG feels soft and can carry gradients, thin lines and a dozen colors at no extra cost per color. It's also why it likes cotton. Our oversized tee is a Bella+Canvas 3010 in 6 oz combed and ring-spun cotton, and our regular tee is a 4.2 oz Bella+Canvas 3001. Heavier cotton holds the ink well, which we covered in is a 6 oz t-shirt heavy?

Which one is better for a t-shirt?
It depends on the shirt and the design.
Pick DTG when the tee is cotton and the art is detailed. A full-color trippy print looks better when the ink is part of the fabric, and you don't get a stiff patch on your chest in July. The cosmic eye on our Psychedelic Trippy tee is the kind of busy, many-color print DTG handles well. So are most of our trippy shirts.
Pick DTF when the shirt is polyester, like most gym and running tees, or when you only need a small logo or a name on a jersey. It also suits a shop that wants to print transfers in bulk and press them later.
For an everyday graphic tee, most people want a soft print on cotton that breathes. That's why we went with DTG. Looked after, a DTG print fades slowly instead of peeling. What makes one crack is in does DTG printing crack?
How to tell which one your tee has
Run your hand over the print. A smooth layer with a clear edge, a bit like a sticker, is probably DTF or another transfer. If the print feels almost like the rest of the shirt and you can still feel the weave, it's DTG.
Look at the edges. A DTF transfer has a crisp outline because it was cut from film. DTG edges blend a little into the threads.
Stretch it gently. A transfer stretches as one piece. A DTG print moves with the fabric.
Try it on an anime shirt before you buy one. That's where sticker-like transfers turn up most, and it's the main check in our guide, what is anime merch?
How to make either print last
The care is nearly the same for both:
- Turn the tee inside out before you wash it.
- Wash in cold water and skip bleach.
- Tumble dry low, or hang it.
- Iron it inside out, never on the print.
Every tee in our oversized graphic tees range is printed with DTG after you order. Printing and packing take 2 to 5 business days, then the carrier takes 3 to 4, and US shipping is free.
Is DTF printing better than DTG?
Not always. DTF is better on polyester, blends and small logos. DTG is better for detailed, full-color art on cotton, and the print feels softer.
Does DTF printing feel like plastic?
It can. The print is a thin layer of ink and glue on top of the fabric, so it feels smoother and stiffer than DTG, more so on large designs.
Does DTF work on cotton?
Yes. DTF works on cotton as well as polyester and blends, because glue holds the print on instead of the fibers soaking up the ink.
Can you iron a DTF or DTG print?
Yes, but turn the tee inside out and keep the iron off the print. Direct heat can damage both.
Which printing does ZOJO use?
DTG, on every tee, printed by Printful in the USA after you order. Our oversized tees are 6 oz cotton and our regular tees are 4.2 oz cotton (the heather colors are a cotton blend).
