What is anime merch? A buyer's guide for the US

Anime merch is any product made around an anime, a manga or its characters: t-shirts and hoodies, figures, posters, keychains, phone cases. For most people in the US it means clothing, because that's what you actually wear. It comes in two kinds. Licensed merch is made under a deal with the studio or publisher, and the tag says so. Fan merch is artwork inspired by a show, drawn and printed by an artist or a small brand. Either one can be great or terrible. What decides it is the fabric, the print and whether the seller is honest about which kind it is. Our anime shirts are fan art, and we say that on the page.
Licensed vs fan art, and how to tell
A licensed shirt tells you who licensed it. The listing or the tag names the studio or the publisher, and part of the price goes to them as a royalty. If a listing says "official" but can't name the licensor, treat it as fan art with a marketing problem.
Fan art is drawn by someone who watched the show. That's why it's often more interesting than the same five poster frames licensed lines reuse for years. A good small brand says it's fan art up front. Our Itachi, Luffy, Gojo and Eren tees are our own drawings inspired by the shows, not studio merch.
There's a third kind that's harder to find: anime-style designs with no character from any show. Our Oni Mode, No Master and Round Two tees are that. Nobody else owns the character, because there isn't one.
What to check before you buy an anime tee
Fabric weight. US shops list it in ounces per square yard. The lower the number, the lighter and thinner the tee. Our regular tee, the Bella+Canvas 3001, is 4.2 oz (about 142 GSM), soft and close-fitting. Our oversized tee, the Bella+Canvas 3010, is 6 oz (about 203 GSM), heavy enough that a boxy cut hangs instead of clinging. The longer version is in is a 6 oz t-shirt heavy?
Print method. A cheap vinyl transfer sits on top of the fabric like a sticker. It feels like plastic and peels at the edges. DTG prints the ink into the cotton, so it bends with the shirt. Every ZOJO tee is DTG, printed by Printful in the USA after you order. If you want the side-by-side, read DTF vs DTG printing.
Print size. Anime prints look right big. Most of our front prints are close to 16 in tall, the full height of the 3010's print area, and Luffy, Zoro and Gojo are one big print on the back. A print that size on a slim tee looks like a bib, which is why most anime fans go oversized.
Fit. Oversized means wide, short and dropped at the shoulder. Take your usual size and it already sits loose. Should you size up in an oversized t-shirt? has the chest and length in inches.
What anime merch costs
Our anime tees are $39.99 on the 6 oz oversized tee and $29.99 on the 4.2 oz regular tee, with free shipping in the US. Licensed shirts carry the royalty in their price, so they usually cost more for the same blank. Figures and statues are a different world, and they start where tees stop.
Where to buy anime merch
Big marketplaces have the most choice and the most copies. Search "anime shirt" and you'll scroll past the same few poster frames from a hundred sellers, often with no fabric weight listed. When you can, buy from a brand's own site. You get the real blank and weight, a size chart that matches it, and someone who answers an email.
Conventions are the fun option. You touch the fabric, meet the artist and pay a bit more for it.
Is anime merch legal to sell?
Licensed merch is. Fan art is a gray area that studios mostly leave alone when it's original artwork sold honestly as fan art. Copies of official artwork get taken down.
What's the difference between anime merch and otaku merch?
Nothing much. Otaku is the Japanese word for an obsessive fan, so "otaku merch" is anime merch with a wink at the buyer.
How do I wash an anime shirt so the print lasts?
Inside out, cold water, no bleach, and dry it on low heat. Turn it inside out before you iron it, too. Does DTG printing crack? covers what to expect after a lot of washes.
How long does a ZOJO anime tee take to arrive?
Printing and packing take 2 to 5 business days and shipping takes 3 to 4, so most orders arrive 5 to 9 business days after you order. You can return one within 7 days of delivery for a full refund.
